“No man is an island,
entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main…”Meditation XVII, John Donne (1572-1631)
Computing has entered a new age. Apps and data are more distributed than ever before. The Internet of Things (IoT) and mobility demand computing beyond traditional data centres, anywhere, always on and at any time.
The creatives of functionality (aka developers) want access to resources faster and the business visibility across any platform to ensure users are always connected.
But the tools used to manage infrastructure have struggled to keep pace. IT admins are stuck using multiple islands of on-premises management infrastructure, often tied to specific hardware, while being asked to optimise the environment in day-to-day operations and keep things running smoothly.
In the famous words of John Donne, ‘no man is an island’. We believe the same rings true for computing infrastructure, which is why we’ve massively simplified data centre operations by delivering systems management as-a-service, from the cloud.
Introducing a new era for computing
Cisco Intersight provides IT teams with a management, orchestration and operational analytics platform for Unified Computing System (UCS) and HyperFlex – our converged and hyperconverged infrastructures.
Of course, UCS was designed from the outset as programmable infrastructure. A full stack of data centre technologies combined into pre-engineered, tested and supported systems operating as a whole, and managed and controlled by software.
UCS made life a lot easier for our end users.
More than 60,000 organisations worldwide now enjoy proven operational advantages such as 40% faster infrastructure deployment, a 38% reduction in ongoing management costs, and over a 90% reduction in downtime compared to commodity server infrastructures. (See here for further UCS benefits)
The singular elegance of UCS arises from the way management functionality has been removed from the individual elements (servers, networking, storage) and centralised in the fabric.
With the launch of Intersight, we’ve taken this centralised management and policy control engine and moved it to the cloud.
This opens up a huge new range of possibilities.
You can now scale capacity without additional capex investment in infrastructure to manage infrastructure. What’s more, artificial intelligence (AI)-infused, cloud-management tools provide deep insights into the state of your infrastructure. You will be able to identify issues before they become major problems and benefit from faster root cause identification.
The data we collect from the devices connected to Cisco Intersight enables us to develop actionable intelligence for users. This is achieved via analytics and machine learning applied to the machine data (not customer or business data) generated by thousands of customer environments.
Intersight complements and will be fully integrated with UCS management software. Ultimately, it will deliver all of the functionality of our existing tools, including UCS Director (in the future), which existing users will be able to adopt at their own pace.
There’s no need to add any hardware to connect your Cisco UCS or HyperFlex system to Intersight. All you need is the latest release of the software and you can begin in a matter of minutes.

As we continue to develop the ability of Intersight to learn from, adapt to and combine machine data with policy-driven automation, it has the potential to truly transform operations.
We’re relieving IT of the burden of maintaining the islands of on premise management infrastructure.
Indeed, the whole ethos driving our innovation is to help you manage all the changes you’re seeing – the proliferation of webscale cloud native apps, the exponential growth in data, and the need to keep your apps and data safe on-premises, in the cloud, and on any device.
The Cisco Data Centre helps you develop, deploy and run your business-essential applications and workloads quickly, securely, and reliably across the multicloud domain.
Visit IP Expo being held at the ExCeL London 4-5 October and stop by the Cisco booth stand C28 to chat with one of our team and request a live demo on:
- AppDynamics – see how within four clicks you can identify the root-cause of any application performance issue, drilling down to the exact line of code
- HyperFlex – deploy a Cisco HyperFlex 4-node cluster and simulate VDI, VDI, Oracle, MS SQL Workloads for benchmarking
- Tetration – analyse every app, every transaction, every packet for trends, changes, and anomalies to provide actionable insights
